H1N1 (Swine) Flu Update
Swine Flu, we’re alerting our
contacts on ways to prevent and counteract the spread of the virus.
Please print and post the attachment at your place of work or business.
The following message is from Chris Hrouda, Executive Vice
President, and Richard J. Benjamin, M.D., Chief Medical Officer:
The World Health Organization (WHO) has elevated its alert status for
the H1N1 Flu (swine flu) outbreak to Level 4, indicating its belief that
this disease has demonstrated limited human-to-human spread and has the
potential to become a pandemic. In addition, the U.S. federal government
has declared a precautionary public health emergency. To date, H1N1 Flu
infections in the U.S. have been localized and non-fatal.
The WHO and U.S. government declarations correspond to the “preparation”
phase in the American Red Cross pandemic plan. At this time the American
Red Cross is urging all staff, donors and sponsors to take heightened
seasonal flu precautions:
* Utilize cough and sneeze etiquette by covering your mouth and nose
* Frequently wash your hands or use alcohol-based cleansers
* Reduce close person-to-person contact
* Stay home if feeling unwell
* Contact your physician with any flu-like symptoms
The H1N1 Influenza is a contagious respiratory disease that affects pigs
and is caused by a type-A influenza virus. Outbreaks in pigs occur
year-round. The current strain is a new variation of an H1N1 virus,
which is a mix of human and animal versions. When the flu spreads
person-to-person, instead of from animals to humans, it can continue to
mutate, making it harder to treat or fight off because people have no
natural immunity.
The symptoms of this H1N1 Flu outbreak, which are similar to the common
flu, include fever, lethargy, appetite loss, coughing, runny nose, sore
throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. The virus spreads when an
infected person coughs or sneezes around another person. People can
become infected by touching something with the flu virus on it and then
touching their mouth, nose or eyes.

The total amount raised exceeded their goal by $15,000! The total
was $80,200.67. Even though we didn't meet our goal, the momentum is
there and next year's campaign will be an even bigger success! The
TAA was presented with an appreciation plaque for our involvement
and support of the Red Cross. Great job, everyone!

Celebration Luncheon was at 11:30 on Tuesday, April 14th!
We’ll reveal the final total raised at this luncheon, so if you’re
curious about how we did, you better come! More details coming soon.

Dear TAA Members & Prospective Members,
I am writing to thank you for your participation and interest in the
Tippecanoe Apartment Association (TAA). As president of the TAA, I have
the distinct privilege of announcing our support for the local chapter
of the American Red Cross. The TAA established a formal partnership with
the American Red Cross last fall and we now have a fantastic opportunity
to lend our support to their annual Hero’s Campaign. The Hero’s Campaign
runs the entire month of March and represents the primary fundraising
initiative for the American Red Cross in a given year.
We ask that you please read through the following literature carefully
to gain a better understanding of the many areas in which this
fundraiser will help have a positive impact on people’s lives. I believe
that the success of the TAA’s role in Hero’s Campaign lies squarely on
the enthusiasm behind the initiative. As property managers and business
owners, we have the unique opportunity to tap into the resources of our
residents, staff members, owners, contractors and customers. We have
over 10,000 apartment homes in the TAA, many with two, three and four
bedrooms and we have access to hundreds of people beyond our walls. Our
goal during the first year of support is to raise over $10,000 for this
Hero’s Campaign. If every resident and customer chipped in $1 we would
well exceed our goal and we know that many owners have agreed to match a
dollar for dollar contribution (see example below).
We are leaving a lot of freedom to be creative in raising support. Some
properties are selling Hero’s Squares, some have set out collection
canisters, some are challenging buildings to compete against each other
for prizes, some are offering Red Cross safety kits to those who raise
the most money, etc. Below is one realistic goal among many strategies
that could work.
100 unit property (25-1 bedrooms, 50-2 bedrooms and 25-3 bedrooms) and
each resident contributes $1.
25 one bedrooms x $1=$25
50 two bedrooms x $2=$100
25 three bedrooms x $3=$75
$200 Total Resident Contribution
$200 Owner Match Contribution
$400 Total Property Contribution
All proceeds are to be returned to a TAA board member or the Red Cross
by March 31st at the latest.
On behalf of the TAA board and the American Red Cross, thank you for
your support for such a worthy cause as the Hero’s Campaign. Please feel
free to contact anyone on the TAA board or Liz Wallace (742-6975 ext,
2217or Liz@tippearc.org ) from the
Red Cross with questions. We look forward to working together to make
March a great month for our community!!!
Sincerely,
John G. Pfleeger
